Question and Answer with Dr. Locke about Botox® Cosmetic:

How Does Botox® Cosmetic Work?

Botox® is the trade name for botulinum toxin. In dilute quantities, this toxin can be safely injected into certain facial muscles to prevent them from contracting so forcefully. This forceful contraction is what causes the skin to wrinkle and leads to the aged appearance. By softening these muscles, Botox® prevents the skin from wrinkling as severely. The result is a more youthful appearance with softer and less wrinkles.
How is the Botox® Procedure Performed?

Using a very fine needle, Botox® is injected precisely into the specific facial muscles that are causing the unwanted wrinkles. This procedure is quick and only takes a few minutes. It does not require any anesthesia (numbing medicine) as it is associated with minimal discomfort.

What can be expected after the Botox® procedure?

After Botox® is injected into the targeted muscles, the weakening effect gradually begins over 5-7 days and takes 2 full weeks to be complete.

Immediately after the procedure, you may have slight redness or swelling at the injection points. This will generally fade within a few minutes.

There is no downtime after the Botox® procedure. You may return to your usual schedule immediately with the exception of heavy exercise or other strenuous activities for the first 24 hours. You will also want to avoid laying down for 4 hours following the procedure to prevent diffusion of the product to unintended areas.

Will I still look natural after Botox®?

Yes! You will be able to achieve a natural look but with less wrinkles when Botox® is administered by an experienced professional. Many patients are worried that Botox® will give them a “frozen” look, meaning they won’t be able to make their usual facial expressions. With Botox®, you can still frown, smile, laugh, and make your normal facial expressions that make you….YOU!

How long does Botox® last?

Botox® Cosmetic is temporary, meaning it will have to be repeated regularly to remain effective. However, you may stop and re-start treatments at any time without side effects.

On average, Botox® will last about 3-4 months depending on individual factors such as depth of the wrinkles, size of the muscles, amount and strength of Botox® used, frequency of re-treatment over time, and speed of neuromuscular repair.
