Question and Answer with Dr. Locke about Dermal Fillers:

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a cosmetic treatment product that is injected into the deeper layers of skin to restore volume to the face and smooth out facial lines and creases that become more prominent with age. Most fillers, such as the Juvéderm® products, are made up of hyaluronic acid which is a substance naturally found in the dermis (deeper layer) of the skin. Hyaluronic acid draws water in which allows for the plump and youthful look.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, Juvéderm® fillers have a very low allergenic potential. Further, Juvéderm® fillers can be quickly dissolved if a patient does not tolerate the product or procedure.

What cosmetic concerns do Dermal Fillers treat?

  • Volume loss of the cheeks causing sagging skin with a “sunken” appearance
  • Underdefined cheekbones
  • Dark circles under the eyes (“tear trough” area) that are causing a hollow appearance and tired look
  • Thin lips
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth
  • Facial creases of the cheeks and mouth

How long do dermal fillers last?

The duration of dermal fillers varies from person to person depending on the type of filler used, how quickly one’s body metabolizes the filler product, and how expressive a person is with their facial movements. The typical duration of Juvéderm® fillers is 6-12 months.
